Inside our hotel of the week
Balmoral Hotel, Harrogate, North Yorkshire
WHERE AND WHY: The beauty of this hotel is that you’re not smack bang in the middle of Harrogate, yet you’re only a 10-minute stroll away if you fancy a shopping trip or a night out. The 100-year old York stone building is slightly deceiving in that it has traditional Victorian architecture on the outside but is cosy and modern with rather opulent décor on the inside. Think elaborate flock wallpaper, giant chandeliers and large leather armchairs.
ON THE MENU: The Grille restaurant is on the ground floor and open to guests and visitors. It’s quite informal but you’ve pretty much got the lot. For breakfast you can choose between a hearty fry-up or muesli and yoghurt. The sea bream served at dinner was delicious (and the lamb looked pretty tasty too). And there’s a great selection of affordable wines to wash it all down with. Service is top-notch and friendly too.
WHILE YOU’RE THERE: It would be criminal to spend a weekend in Harrogate without paying a visit to Betty’s tea rooms. But be prepared to queue – their cream teas are extremely popular. Take a dip in the public Turkish baths down the same street. They’re much better than your average swimming baths!
WAKE-UP CALL: Double rooms start at £110 (not including breakfast). Call 01423 508208 or visit the hotel’s website, www.balmoralhotel.co.uk
