As Sheffield prepares to welcome its first ‘boutique’ hotel, in Leopold Street, it comes as no surprise to find that London is streets ahead in terms of offering another concept.
Can you have a ‘luxury budget’ hotel? Sinclair Beecham, the co-founder of Prêt a Manger sandwich chain, reckons so and has had a good crack at it with the Hoxton Lodge hotel.
The hotel only opened last September. Luxury? Well, you certainly get the feel of somewhere that bit special as you step from the street into a large lounge and reception area.
At either side are blazing log fires with leather sofas scattered in between. It’s more country lodge than a clinical place to check in. A table piled with art, architecture and fashion books further sets the tone.
The Hoxton Grille, the new restaurant complex that forms part of the hotel complex is run by Room Restaurants, which also has a place in Leeds city centre. It’s a modern brasserie and lounge bar, characterised by plenty of exposed brick, modern art on the walls and a vibrant atmosphere.
There’s everything from something to start the day such as eggs Benedict (£6.50) or organic porridge (£3.50) to burgers (£9.50) and Gloucester old spot sausage and mash (£10) to full blown meals such as grilled leg of lamb with provençale jus (£14).
Good food and good fun.
